The assembly of the so-called state of Kosovo has been dissolved, and early parliamentary elections will be held on December 28. This was decided by Vjosa Osmani after consultations with the leaders of political parties, without the participation of the Serbian List.
After two unsuccessful attempts by the Self-Determination Movement, led by Albin Kurti, to form a government, and with no desire from the other parties to do so together, Kosovo must head to early parliamentary elections. Elections will be held on the date requested specifically by Self-Determination, without a budget for next year or for the electoral process.
“I made a final effort to return the parties to the Assembly so they could approve an extension of the budget, so that neither the salaries of our citizens nor the functioning of the state would be blocked, and so that we would have a budget until March. Second, there was the presidential package of five international agreements worth one billion euros, and other important issues for which I hoped there would be political will, but there wasn’t,” said Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.
Hekuran Murati from the Self-Determination Movement said that for nine months the opposition parties “together with the Serbian List have been working against Albin Kurti.”
“Their only goal is to oppose Albin Kurti without any alternative, while also setting aside any state or civic interest,” he stated.
According to representatives of the other parties, it was Kurti’s party that consistently pursued only its own party interests, supported by the president.
“Those who deceived by claiming they had the numbers were from the Self-Determination Movement. Since the end of the elections on February 9, they have been claiming they have a majority, and it has been proven that they do not and never did. This is extremely offensive to the citizens,” said Armend Zemaj of the Democratic League of Kosovo.
He also said that they had asked for a transitional government, that the others did not even want to discuss it, and that such a government “would serve the citizens.”
“And when they come here and talk to you about budgets, about missed opportunities, do not forget that the main responsibility for why Kosovo does not have a budget today, why the employees of budgetary institutions do not have salaries today, lies with them. They were not able to form at least a consensus government so that the budget could be adopted,” said Fatmir Limaj of NISMA.
And the fact that no party sincerely wanted to form institutions is also shown by the fact that with the Serbian List, either Self-Determination or the other largest parliamentary parties would have had more than the required majority. The Serbian List also did not want a coalition with Kurti’s party, and there is no information on whether it would have agreed to cooperate with the others.
