The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, stated today that the US has postponed sanctions on NIS for only four more days and that they will be introduced starting on October 1st, and he conveyed that the state will do everything it can to protect its citizens.

“I can’t call this good news, but it is expected, as I announced it to you yesterday, it seems to me that the Americans have extended the non-imposition of sanctions for only four more days, that is, from September 27th to October 1st, meaning from October 1st we will have sanctions imposed on NIS,” Vučić told reporters in New York.

He says that we are collateral damage in the relations between the Americans and the Russians, the West and the Russians, but that we will pay a high price. He reminded that the Russians are the majority owner of NIS.

“So, let’s be absolutely clear and for all our citizens to understand. We have been extremely fair to our Russian partners and our American partners. We will try to remain fair, but people must know that we will pay an extremely high price,” Vučić said.

The President said that he is convinced the Russians will say they have reserves for a month or two, but that problems will follow because no bank will want to work with NIS.

“But since financial transactions are prohibited, because no bank will want to work, then there will be a problem with salary payments and everything else. But let’s see, let’s wait. Maybe some miracle happens by October 1st. Everything I asked for, they wanted to show respect and say – here, we won’t do it immediately, I think four days means that employees’ entitlements could be paid out, so we can see how and what. I don’t know what to tell you, but a difficult time and a hard winter certainly await us,” Vučić said.

He conveyed that the state will do everything it can to ensure citizens have a warm winter in their homes, and that they do not have to worry about supplies for their cars, as well as those who drive buses and trucks.

“And everything else will be much, much harder. And now everything, absolutely everything after this, is further complicated for us and is creating huge political, economic, and every other kind of problem. I have nothing else to tell you, but we will fight, we will talk and look for a way out of a very unpleasant and difficult situation – we neither ate nor smelled the onion, but we will certainly pay the highest price,” Vučić stated.

Sanctions on NIS have so far been postponed six times, the last time until September 26th.

“Serbia is working on finding a solution”

Serbia is working on finding a solution to the introduction of American sanctions on NIS, but there is very little interest from certain sides in the problems we face, Vučić added.

Vučić, answering a question about whether there is a plan on how to solve the problem of sanctions against NIS that the US will introduce starting October 1st, said that he hit a wall while looking for a solution.

“We are working and examining all possibilities, but when you see that there is little interest from certain sides in the problems that Serbia is facing, what can you do. We are hitting a wall, how can we break through the wall with our head, no matter which side we try from, we will hurt our head. We are trying to find some other way that won’t be a collision with the wall,” Vučić said.

As he added, he does not see a solution to this problem at the moment and calls on everyone in Serbia to point it out if they see one.

He emphasized that whatever has been offered, the Russian side does not want to accept, and that whatever has been proposed for postponing the sanctions, the Americans are introducing them.

“What should I do, threaten the Russians, the Americans, we are small, it makes no sense, and I have to secure oil for the people,” Vučić stressed.

When asked what will happen with the American tariffs, Vučić said he hopes that issue will be successfully resolved.

“It is a longer process, but I see sun rays at the end of the tunnel. For NIS I entered the tunnel, passed more than half of the tunnel, but I don’t see a glimmer of light, which is why I ask, without any irony, everyone who sees how we could solve this to let us know,” Vučić stated.

He pointed out that Serbia has offered dozens of solutions, but that none was acceptable to any side.

“I am working on having more African countries withdraw their recognition of the so-called Kosovo”

President Vučić stated that he is working on having more African countries derecognize the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called Kosovo, adding that more information on this will be available in October.

He said this in New York, where he is participating in the UN General Assembly session, answering a journalist’s question about whether work is being done to have more African countries derecognize the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called Kosovo.

“I am working on it. You will have new information very soon in October. We already have something completed,” Vučić said.

When asked whether the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with whom he spoke yesterday, understands the position of Serbs in AP Kosovo and Metohija a little better, Vučić replied that he does understand and that the UN has UNMIK reports and is very well aware of the position of the Serbs.

“The UN understands and realizes this well. We have some other things with them here that we don’t agree on, but these are things they understand. We talked with everyone about Kosovo and Metohija, and with Kaja Kallas… and with António Costa,” Vučić said.

“I pointed out the difficult position of Serbs in KiM to everyone”

In conversations with European officials, our country confirmed its commitment to the European path, the continuation and acceleration of reforms, Vučić said and added that he pointed out the difficult position of the Serbian people in KiM (Kosovo and Metohija) to everyone.

“In all these conversations, primarily the most important ones with the leaders of the European Union, we confirmed our commitment to the European path, the continuation and acceleration of reforms. We talked, I think in an extremely democratic way, about some disagreements as well, but unequivocally confirmed Serbia’s desire to speed up its European path. And of course, we talked about what needs to be done to make our mutual communication better, and also how and in what way to establish better communication within our country,” Vučić told reporters.

He said he reiterated his initiative, which he also highlighted before the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, concerning dialogue and talks in Serbia.

“And I believe that everyone understood that message well. We also talked about the regional situation, the situation in BiH, primarily regarding Republika Srpska and Serbia’s attitude toward all of that. We talked, of course, about the situation in Kosovo and Metohija with everyone; I pointed out the difficult position of the Serbian people, what has been happening to them since the moment Kurti took power and everything that happened before that, but especially what has been happening since that moment,” Vučić said.

He emphasized that he also spoke about Serbia’s policy, the policy of peace, stability, and the policy of the future, and added that he spoke about the Expo in meetings with foreign officials.

“It seems to me that the range of conversations was set very broadly, because when you add up everything that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and our other officials initiated, I think that we really had many proper bilateral meetings. Not just casual greetings, and I think that with hard and strenuous work, we did a good job for our citizens,” Vučić said.

He said he also had a two-hour conversation with the President of the European Council, António Costa.

“I had conversations with the German Minister of Foreign Affairs. We had conversations with the United Nations Secretary-General Guterres, with the President of Congo. We had conversations with Kaja Kallas, I would say a long and serious conversation with the European Head of Foreign Affairs and Security, with the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Lammy. He will also have a conversation with Mr. Netanyahu in the afternoon, and many other conversations with people from the so-called non-aligned countries,” Vučić said.

Vučić previously met with the Secretary of State for Justice and Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy, at the UN building in New York.

The President will later attend a reception hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Marko Đurić, in honor of the anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement – “A Review of the Founding of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Talks in New York in 1960.”

Previously, President Vučić spoke today with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, with the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, as well as with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, Kaja Kallas.
