The Appellate Court in Novi Sad has revoked the detention of five suspects in the investigation into the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad Railway Station on November 1, when 16 people died.
“The Appellate Court in Novi Sad issued a decision partially accepting the appeals of the defense attorneys of the accused in the criminal proceedings related to the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad Railway Station and amended the decision of the Higher Court in Novi Sad, by removing the grounds for detention under Article 211, paragraph 1, point 3 of the Criminal Procedure Code for the accused Ljiljana Milić Marković, Zorica Slavković Marjanović, and Dušan Janković, and by revoking the detention for them and for the accused Milan Spremić and Dejan Todorović,” the Higher Court announced.
The accused have been ordered a measure of prohibition from leaving their apartment with electronic surveillance for a duration of three months, with a prohibition on using phones and the internet and a prohibition on receiving other persons in the apartment.
In its explanation, the second-instance court states that the purpose of detention in this specific case can also be achieved with a milder measure that will also restrict the freedom of movement and communication of the accused, the statement reads.
To recall, an indictment was filed against 13 people at the end of last year, but the court returned it for further investigation.
Among the accused are: J.T. (Jelena Tanasković), former acting general director of “Infrastruktura železnice Srbije” a.d., G.V. (Goran Vesić), former Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, A.D. (Anita Dimovski), former acting Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, and N.Š. (Nebojša Šurlan), former general director of “Infrastruktura železnice Srbije” a.d. They are charged with committing the criminal offense of Grave act against general safety from Article 288, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with the criminal offense of Causing general danger from Article 278, paragraph 3 in conjunction with paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code.
The indictment was also filed against the accused: S.N., responsible designer of the civil engineering structure, M.J., chief designer of the conceptual design, Lj.M.M., chief designer of the construction permit project, M.S., rapporteur for structures of the Republic Revision Commission, J.S.M., person responsible for technical control, Z.S.M. and D.J., persons responsible for the execution of construction works, M.G. and D.T., persons responsible for expert supervision, due to justified suspicion that they committed the criminal offense of Grave act against general safety from Article 288, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with the criminal offense of Improper and irregular execution of construction works from Article 281, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.
