The conflict in Ukraine is a proxy war between the U.S. and Russia, stated U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“President Donald Trump believes this is a prolonged conflict that has reached a stalemate. And, frankly speaking, it is a proxy war between nuclear powers—the U.S., which is aiding Ukraine, and Russia. It is necessary to put an end to this,” Rubio told Fox News.
He added that Kyiv, the U.S. Congress, and other countries previously believed that simply providing Ukraine with whatever it needed, whenever necessary, would be sufficient. However, this is not a strategy, the politician assessed.
Washington is urging Kyiv not to undermine U.S. efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and to show interest in achieving peace, Rubio emphasized.
According to him, both sides must be present at the negotiating table.
“Ukraine needs to be at the table because it is their country. Russia needs to be at the table. And only President Trump can make that happen. That has been and remains his goal,” he stated.

The Secretary of State said that the U.S. administration hopes that Ukraine, after changing its stance, is now genuinely interested in negotiations to resolve the crisis.
“As for the Russians, they won’t be easy to deal with either, right? But we need to find out what they are willing to do when they sit at the negotiating table. We wouldn’t be able to do that if the Ukrainians had said they weren’t interested. That has now changed, and we hope that it is true. That would be good for everyone—for the Russian people, the people of Ukraine, the people of the U.S., and, frankly, our European partners and allies. They, too, would benefit from this outcome,” Rubio concluded.
