Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has resigned. Vučević confirmed his resignation at an extraordinary press conference in the Serbian government.
“When I received the mandate at the end of April last year, I certainly had a strong sense of pride, but above all, I tried to understand the responsibility that this job and position carries. I was aware of the complicated geopolitical situation and the situation in Serbia, in the region,” he said, adding that he is very proud of what they have done as a Government, especially in the field of economy.
“We had the second largest economic growth in 2024 in Europe and enabled an 11 percent increase in pensions and a general increase in salaries for everyone in the public sector, we were moving in a good direction. What cast a big shadow is the tragic event in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, a great tragedy,” he noted and continued:
“From that moment on, Serbia seemed to remain trapped in that accident. Since then, we have seen attempts to politically capitalize on this misfortune, the loss of human lives,” he said.
“What leaves deep consequences for our society is a serious division, creating an atmosphere in society that everything is on the verge of conflict, that we have come to the point where students in schools are counted who go to class and who do not. Everything is absolutely deliberately designed from abroad, I have no doubt about it, and this has hit the education of children,” he points out.
“We have a duty to take the first step towards calming passions, for the Government to invite rectors, deans, professors, and especially students, to come and talk about all the topics they consider most important… And then, this morning when I woke up, I saw the news from Novi Sad, that late last night there was a physical confrontation on the street, that one of the students, a young woman Ana, was injured, and that the conflict started because someone came to the party premises of the SNS again, that people there felt that they should defend it and that the conflict eventually ended at another location. I wish Ana a speedy recovery, I received information that she was released for home treatment at her request. This is certainly unacceptable, I expect the perpetrators to be arrested and their criminal and legal responsibility to be determined. I can never understand many of these protests, protest blockades, movements, attacks on citizens who think differently, attacks on students who want to study. I will never accept terror against students who want to go to school, insulting and humiliating parents who declare that they want their child to go to school. That is unimaginable,” he said and continued:
“It will be a shame for those who did it, I am sure of that. Anyway, I think that this policy to which I belong, the party that has won all the elections, must show the highest degree of responsibility, and new regularities in Serbian politics and that it is the most responsible. And that is why, after this event, my irrevocable decision to resign. I had a long meeting with the President this morning,” Vučević said, noting that he is proud and grateful, but also responsible for everything that happened.
“The mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, will also resign. We believe that we are objectively responsible for what happened,” Vučević noted.
“We must preserve Serbia as a state, not as an emotion. Let this be something that will continue to be the practice in our country in the future. We consider ourselves objectively responsible for what happened in Novi Sad and voluntarily pay the political price for it. I wish the President of Serbia good luck in his further work, I believe in his wisdom and courage. The entire Government is in a technical mandate, the entire cabinet is falling,” Vučević noted, adding that they will responsibly do their jobs until the election of a new Government.
The head of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) parliamentary group, Milenko Jovanov, previously indirectly announced that the Prime Minister of Serbia, Miloš Vučević, would resign.

Jovanov told reporters in the parliament that Vučević should announce the resignation decision himself, not him. Jovanov also said that there would be no transitional government and ministers without elections, and the session of the Serbian Assembly was postponed.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić yesterday called for “the most urgent and huge reconstruction of the Government”.
Let us remind you, Novi Sad students gathered in the “Stav” group, after the collapse of the canopy at the Railway Station, among other things, demanded the resignations of Vučević and Đurić.
