A new case of bullying occurred at “Duško Radović” Elementary School in Novi Sad when a fifth-grader set the hair of a first-grader on fire. The 7-year-old boy suffered trauma, and while he screamed, he and other older students laughed, according to parents on social media. They revealed that it all happened 15 days ago in the school’s bathroom.
Speaking about the shocking incident, parents said they spoke out in the hope that the situation would change, given that, as they claim, there is a problematic class of fifth-graders in the school, and especially one student “who no one can do anything about.”
“One day, these fifth-graders bullied a first-grader and, while bullying him, they set his hair on fire. At the end of the shift, the teacher escorted the boy to the gate and told the parents that the boy’s hair had been set on fire in the school bathroom. We know which child is involved,” they revealed.
The bullying occurred, they claim, when the fifth-graders were lighting the door and lock in the school bathroom, and the unfortunate first-grader happened to be there.
“He couldn’t get out because of the fifth-graders, and that boy approached him and set his hair on fire from behind,” they added.
The child screamed while the bullies laughed
On the Serbia_live page, a letter was also published that was sent to the Educational Inspectorate by the parents of this elementary school, stating that due to this serious incident, as well as a number of other incidents, the situation in the school is alarming, and they are demanding urgent intervention by the inspectorate to take measures to protect the youngest.
“A group of fifth-graders has been physically and psychologically bullying first-graders for a longer period. These incidents include throwing victims (first-graders) out of the school bathroom, closing the door and preventing them from leaving, which forced the victims to crawl under the door while the bullies mocked them. The situations are additionally alarming and worrying because some of the victims have special needs,” the parents wrote in the letter.
They add that the situation escalated when one of the, as they say, violent fifth-graders used a lighter to set the lock and door of the bathroom on fire, and then, to everyone’s horror, the hair of a first-grader who was peeking out of the cubicle in fear.
“The child started screaming while the bullies laughed. This horrific event caused both physical injury and severe emotional trauma to the victim,” they explained.
