Police detained and then quickly released a group of about a dozen Albanians who were driving through Gračanica, chanting “Kosovo, Kosovo,” and displaying Albanian flags on the occasion of Albania’s Flag Day.

The group of Albanians circled the main street of Gračanica several times, as well as the main road that passes through the town.

They blocked traffic and attempted to remove the Serbian flag from the monument to Miloš Obilić in Gračanica.

Citizens and municipal officials reported the Albanians’ demonstration to the police.

“All the vehicles had Albanian flags and OVK symbols. They were younger people who were flipping off and yelling at people who were passing by,” said Milan Dimitrijević, president of the Gračanica Municipal Assembly.

A police patrol in front of the monastery failed to stop them but prevented them from removing the Serbian flag.

“They blocked traffic in front of the monastery, tried to provoke people who were in the cafe, there was a reaction, and two policemen who were there detained more of our people than them. I went to the police station to report the incident, and there were only two policemen inside. They said that the patrol was in the field,” said Dimitrijević.

Gračanica Mayor Ljiljana Šubarić believes that the entire event was well-organized and planned.

“They were looking for provocations, and we called on the competent institutions to do their job so that such incidents do not happen again, because all people, from all communities, have the right to a normal and peaceful life,” concluded the Mayor of Gračanica.
