“Melania Trump reminded me of a little child,” Hillary Clinton wrote in her memoir Something Lost, Something Gained, published in September of this year, describing the moment when they met for the first time since she lost the 2016 presidential race. Hillary and Mrs. Trump met again at the memorial service for Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady of the United States, in November 2023.
Here’s how Melania Trump was described in Hillary Clinton’s memoir!
“Rosalynn’s grandson, Jason, said it was her wish that all the First Ladies gather at her memorial to show a picture of unity in these times of division. If anyone in the White House or in my or Bill’s Secret Service was informed about Mrs. Trump’s plan to attend, they didn’t tell me,” Clinton (77) wrote in her book, continuing with the moment when she saw Melania at the event:
“But there she was, standing alone until Laura Bush, who seemed to be planning to chat with Melania when the rest of us walked in, approached to greet her.”
“Melania had a specific look on her face—she was very smiley, but somehow insecure, reminding me of a little child at a birthday party who doesn’t know anyone and is waiting in the background, hoping the other people will be kind to her,” the American politician recalled.
“And we were. We all went over to her,” Hillary wrote, referring to the group of former First Ladies, along with then-President Joe Biden.
“Jill kissed her on the cheek, and Michelle Obama gave her one of those big hugs she’s known for. Clinton tried to talk to her, asking how she was, but was met with a smile and only a few words. I extended my hand, shook hers, and said, ‘Hello, Melania, nice to see you. I can imagine how uncomfortable she must have felt, not knowing what kind of reception she would get after all the insults her husband had directed at us: the Bushes, the Bidens, the Obamas, and the Clintons,’” she further reflected.

“I Never Knew What to Think of Melania Trump”
In the book, Hillary emphasized that she “never knew what to think of Melania Trump” and that the First Lady provoked mixed feelings: “I never believed that a woman should be held responsible for her husband’s actions. But did she help and support the worst instincts of her husband? Was she a quiet accomplice in his intolerance and spread of hatred?”
Clinton also revisited the controversial moment when Melania Trump wore the green jacket with military-inspired lettering that read, “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” during her visit to a migrant children’s detention center.
“As for Melania Trump, I will stick to my stance of not judging another woman’s appearance. We already have enough of that,” Hillary commented.
She also made it clear that she didn’t judge Melania for wearing gray instead of black at Rosalynn Carter’s memorial, even though many media outlets criticized the choice as “tacky and insensitive.” “Did I really feel sympathy for Melania after all the ugly things the Trump family has brought to the nation, the world, and my family in recent years? I won’t go that far. But in my opinion, what Melania wore to pay respects to Rosalynn was perfectly appropriate, and I’m sorry she was attacked over something so minor,” she stated.
Clinton also recalled Donald and Melania Trump’s wedding in 2005 in Florida, saying she attended out of curiosity: “I was planning to be in Florida anyway and thought it would be fun to see what a Donald Trump wedding would be like. It was the first time I saw Melania, and I just remember she was young, very beautiful, and very tall. And she didn’t talk much, at least not to me.”
