Legendary Serbian handball coach Veselin Vujović spoke to Jutarnji list about the [political situation in Serbia].

He criticized the government led by [Aleksandar Vučić], describing him as a manipulator like Joseph Goebbels, and blamed widespread illiteracy in Serbia for the situation.

“Something has to change, and everything is moving in an even worse direction. Now those in power in Serbia are trying to introduce legal provisions stating that a person’s property cannot be confiscated even if it has been established that they stole it. Just imagine that. I am convinced they will vote it through for themselves. But we are to blame ourselves, the people are to blame. In Serbia, 50 percent of people think Vučić gives them their pensions. People used to think the same about Josip Broz. I also believed that after him the country would disappear. Everything is full of paradoxes. In Serbia, they ask a man how much his pension is. He says, ‘How should I know, 350 euros.’ Then they ask him, ‘Can you live on that?’ He says, ‘No, I can’t.’ Then they ask, ‘Why do you vote for this government?’ ‘Because Vučić loves Serbia; because he defends us when we are attacked from all sides.’ Who is attacking us, I ask myself? It is sick. He is an experienced manipulator like Joseph Goebbels, but when you take into account how many illiterate people there are in Serbia, and how many do not use the internet, how many have never boarded a plane or traveled anywhere, it is easy to manipulate such people, and that is done very effectively in this region,” Vujović told Jutarnji list. He had previously expressed support for the student protests and blockades in Serbia.

“I did, and I stand by my views and my words. I have had no problems because of those statements, although I know some people have. I do not consider my statements political; I have the right to express them publicly as a free man. I am not in favor of overthrowing the system by force, but of holding fair elections. Voters are brought by bus from Republika Srpska, passports are issued to Iranians, Pakistanis, Chinese, Afghans… But in the Balkans, things will always be the way Europe wants because our politicians go elsewhere for advice; they are not autonomous. We are all colonies.”

Vujović is currently the head coach of the Qatar national team, which is taking part in the Champions Tournament being held these days in Doboj.
