U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Russia with new, high tariffs if it does not agree to a deal to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days.

Speaking to media representatives at the White House alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump stated that he was “very dissatisfied” with Moscow’s behavior.

“If there’s no agreement, we’ll impose serious secondary tariffs – about 100%,” Trump said, as reported by Index.

The American president stated that the U.S. will produce and send “top-tier weaponry” to NATO allies, and that the Alliance will then decide where this weaponry is most needed.

“We will produce top-tier weaponry and send it to NATO,” Trump said, adding that distribution, including deliveries to Ukraine, will be coordinated by the Alliance itself.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called Trump’s decision historic. “This is really a big deal,” Rutte said, adding that it is a decision that will enable Ukraine to effectively defend itself against Russia.

He emphasized that European countries will bear the cost of procuring the weapons, to which Trump added: “That’s completely logical.”

The American president stated that Ukrainians “continue to fight with enormous courage,” but are simultaneously losing a large amount of military equipment.

Rutte followed up with a message that Russia is not bombing Ukrainian cities for military objectives, but to cause panic among the population.

When asked whether only missiles or entire “Patriot” systems are being sent to Ukraine, Trump replied: “Everything. They are getting everything.”

He clarified that NATO members will send their existing systems to Ukraine, while the U.S. will supply them with replacements. The NATO Secretary General added that the agreement includes both missiles and ammunition, confirming that it is a comprehensive delivery of key defensive capabilities.

The American president praised the new agreement within NATO, by which members committed to increasing defense and security spending from the current 2 to 5 percent of GDP by 2035.

Speaking about the results of the recent summit in the Netherlands, Trump said that great progress had been made and added that “many friends have been gained,” describing most countries as “very firm and strong allies.”

Regarding possible new tariffs against Russia, the American president stated that secondary tariffs can be imposed without the approval of the House of Representatives or the Senate. Commenting on a proposal for 500% tariffs, he said that the number no longer matters – “100% is enough.”

Trump said that during the war in Ukraine, he thought four times that he had reached an agreement with Russia, but it never happened. “We should have resolved this long ago, but the war just keeps going and going,” he said, adding that both Russian soldiers and Ukrainians are dying daily.

He stated that Russia should focus on rebuilding its economy, not on waging war. “They have enormous potential and should use their resources for trade, not for warfare,” he said.

Speaking about Vladimir Putin, Trump added: “I talk to him often. Those conversations are very pleasant, but that means nothing anymore when missiles start hitting cities.”

He refused to answer how far he is willing to go against Putin if there is a new escalation of the war in Ukraine.

“Don’t ask me such a question,” replied a visibly irritated Trump, adding that his goal is “to end the war.”
