Abu Dhabi, UAE – U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that, regarding peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, “nothing will happen until” he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Nothing will happen until Putin and I meet, okay? And obviously – he wasn’t going to come. He wanted to come, but he thought I was going to come. He didn’t want to come if I wasn’t there, and I don’t believe anything will happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I meet,” CNN reports.
“But we’re going to have to get that solved because too many people are dying,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he landed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Trump added that he was not disappointed that the Russian delegation that arrived in Turkey on Thursday for high-level talks with Ukraine did not include Putin: “I’m not disappointed in anything.”
He continued: “I’m not disappointed. Why would I be? We just made 4 trillion dollars, and you’re disappointed about a delegation? I don’t know anything about that delegation, I didn’t even check.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that he would not meet with anyone from the Russian delegation in Turkey except Putin personally. He called the delegation that appeared on Thursday “fake.”
Trump hinted earlier on Thursday that a trip to Turkey was still possible, leaving that option open even though senior officials said there were no plans for such a trip.
“If something happens, I would go on Friday if it were appropriate,” he said during a business roundtable in Doha.
Trump previously promised to end Russia’s war against Ukraine on the first day of his term, a promise that proved difficult to fulfill. He has since stated that he “exaggerated.”
