The Serbian Orthodox Church and its faithful celebrate Saint Charitina today, a martyr and saint who lived in the third century.
Her fate was tragic, and the account of her life is one of the most heartbreaking stories in Christianity.
Charitina was a modest, obedient and quiet young woman. At an early age, she decided to become the bride of Christ, at a time when Emperor Diocletian had ordered a major persecution of Christians.
During the persecution, Charitina was captured and brought before a court. After she refused to bow down to pagan deities, she was subjected to horrific torture. Her head was shaved, hot coals were scattered over it, and she was then tied to a wheel that her executioners turned.
Despite such terrible suffering, Charitina remained alive, but the judge ordered that she be thrown into the sea. To the amazement of the assembled crowd, Charitina emerged from the water unharmed. However, the wicked judge, wishing to humiliate her to the very end, sent young men to violate her.
Charitina was an orphan adopted by Claudius, a respected Christian who raised her in the Christian faith from an early age. According to tradition, she passed away after kneeling down to pray just moments before the young men approached to violate her. She died before their hands could touch her.
To this day, Saint Charitina is considered the protector of innocent and modest young women and girls. It is believed that Saint Charitina will help all those who find themselves in trouble today. All they need to do is ask her sincerely, and spiritual help will come.
