Students in blockade have spoken out over the violence in Ub, where a celebration of the Student List’s victory was interrupted by paid regime thugs loyal to Vučić, who seriously injured several people with sticks and baseball bats.

We are publishing the students’ statement in full:

Instead of celebrating freedom and victory on Sunday evening, students from Ub and citizens who had gathered peacefully to celebrate the victory were attacked in the town’s main square.

According to eyewitness accounts, at around 1:30 a.m., a large group of supporters of the former regime attacked those present, armed with sticks, clubs and firearms.

Two people were injured in the attack. One of them suffered injuries to the nose and knee after being struck with a club.

When an eyewitness approached to help the injured person, members of the local citizens’ assembly also arrived to assist.

However, after a few minutes, the same group attacked those gathered again, this time targeting members of the assembly as well. One of them sustained more serious bodily injuries. Both injured individuals were treated at the General Hospital in Valjevo, where they had been taken in private vehicles.

Today, a decision is being made on whether the detention of these same individuals will be extended for 30 days or whether they will be released. We appeal to our fellow citizens not to gather if they are released.

Candidates from the Student List have still not entered Parliament and taken their oaths as members of parliament.

When that moment comes, the change of government will begin, and everyone who must answer before the law WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

For the past two years, we have remained dignified and patient. Let us remain that way just a little longer, the statement from the students in blockade reads.
