The Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) has accused protesting students of “living in parallel universes” where “the values of Saint Sava are ridiculed.”
Students in Serbia live in parallel universes, and it is up to them to decide whether they wish to live in the world spoken of by Patriarch Porfirije or in one where all Saint Sava’s values and Serbian identity markers are ridiculed, stated the Serbian Orthodox Church in a statement signed by Patriarchate official Dušan Stokanović.

The SOC statement reads: “While some students proudly carry icons and state flags, kissing them and crossing themselves, others at three faculties – the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, the Faculty of Political Sciences, and the Faculty of Law – silently and without protest watch as that same flag is desecrated and defiled on stage, and those who cross themselves with the cross are subjected to the most shameless insults.”
“An even clearer example that Serbian students live in parallel, if not multi-universes, occurred last night, on the eve of Saint Sava’s holiday,” the SOC added.
It continued: “While students at the University of Belgrade, in prayerful silence during the pre-festive vigil, filled the Saint Sava Temple, listened to Patriarch Porfirije’s sermon, and then enjoyed the Saint Sava Academy, in Serbian Athens, at Matica Srpska, the temple of Serbian science, culture, and art, a group claiming to be students violently interrupted the local Saint Sava Academy, intending to impose their anti-Saint Sava, anti-Christian, and anti-Serbian narrative and concept of life.”
It is up to the students to decide “which universe they wish to live in,” the SOC concluded, adding, “Whatever they decide, so it shall be.”
