The Serbian women’s national tennis team defeated Lithuania 2:0 today in Oeiras, Portugal, in the third match of the second round of the Euro-African Group 1 of the Billie Jean King Cup.

The first point for Serbia was brought by Natalija Senić, after she defeated Iveta Dapkute in two sets 6:0, 6:2.

Senić, the 366th ranked tennis player in the world, defeated the 805th on the WTA list after an hour and 12 minutes.

“I played the match and managed to win, even though I didn’t feel my best physically. I managed to overcome that and give my maximum on the court. The atmosphere in the team is truly great and I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to play and fight for my country,” said Senić, as reported by the Tennis Federation of Serbia (TSS).

The second point for Serbia was brought by Mia Ristić, who defeated Justina Mikulskite after three sets 7:6(1), 6:7 (3), 6:3.

Ristić emphasized that it is a great pleasure for her to be part of the Serbian national team.

“In the national team, we give our all every day, we encourage each other, we cheer. This was a long and difficult match and I am happy that I managed to pull out the victory. Although we don’t know the name of the opponent tomorrow yet, we know that we are all a team here, both the physiotherapists and the doctor, and we are all somewhat responsible for all of this. We can’t wait to go out on the court tomorrow and fight, to leave both heart and soul on the court for Serbia,” she added.

Serbia qualified as first in the group for the play-offs and will play against the first-placed selection from Group D (Portugal or Sweden).

In case of victory in that duel, Serbia will qualify for the play-offs for the World Group. In case of defeat in the semifinals, Serbia would have one more chance to qualify for the World Group play-offs, and for that, a victory in the match for third place would be needed, reports Beta.
