Steve Bannon, a former advisor to US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, was released from prison today, ABC News reported, citing unnamed sources. Bannon was released from federal prison at 3:00 a.m., and is expected to hold a press conference in New York today.
The former Trump advisor was released from prison exactly one week before the US presidential election.
A jury found Bannon guilty on two counts of contempt of Congress: first, for refusing to testify before a House committee on the events of January 6, 2020, and second, for refusing to provide documents related to his involvement in former President Trump’s attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democratic candidate Joseph Biden.
