The “Biot and the Templars” festival is held in the town of Biot on the Azure Coast in France and represents one of the most famous medieval manifestations in the region. During the festival, the entire old town turns into a living historical scene, with knightly tournaments, battle reenactments, medieval crafts, musical performances, workshops, and a rich offer of traditional food and content that evoke the atmosphere of the 13th century and the era of the Templars. Each year, the event gathers numerous participants from all over Europe and a large number of visitors.
However, this year the festival was particularly marked by teams from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina — the knightly associations “Grac” from Trućevac near Despotovac and “Rusag” from Prijedor-Republika Srpska.
After one of the festival events, their members accidentally met on the streets of the old town of Biot, where a spontaneous recognition and socializing took place. The meeting soon turned into a joint singing of Krajina songs, which are well known in both areas and which drew the attention and interest of the festival visitors.
Gathered French people and festival guests soon gathered around them with delight, listening to the unusual blend of culture and tradition, and many asked for translations of the songs to better understand their content. The members of the associations sang the songs to them in as many as three languages, which further contributed to the atmosphere of togetherness and enthusiasm among the present French people and festival visitors. This charming event of meeting and brotherly singing was noticed and recorded by local French television, which followed this unusual moment of cultural encounter in the heart of medieval Biot with great interest.
Oliver Urošević from the “Grac” association gave an interview for the French television TF1, explaining in fluent French the origin of the songs they sang and why such songs are close to our people’s hearts; he also thanked the organizers of this festival for their warm hospitality, and the visitors for their interest in our cultural heritage.
