The Rector of the University of Belgrade, Dr. Vladan Đokić, issued a statement regarding the “continuous efforts of certain actors” to present him as a leader and representative of students. The Rector emphasized that he stands firmly with the students and the academic community demanding the rule of law, but that he is not the leader of the academics.

As the Rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan Đokić, pointed out, students decide independently on their way of organizing and their models of work, and no one has the right to impose themselves on them in any way.

“I am not a representative of the students, but I stand firmly with them and the academic community that demands the rule of law and a dignified life in their country. My responsibility is, from the position of Rector and as one of the representatives of the academic community, to contribute to the understanding of what universities and the entire society in Serbia are going through today, as well as to protect the right of students and the university to free, dignified, and responsible action,” Đokić pointed out.

He adds that he provides full support in the fight for democratic principles and for the public interest.

“Since the beginning of the protests, I have supported their demands and I believe that every responsible citizen of our country should strive for their fulfillment, because without justice, independent institutions, and responsible individuals, there is no improvement for our society. Today, students are the carriers of social changes, and it is up to us to be with them and support them for the sake of preserving the university and the rule of law in our country,” the statement concludes.
