The Prime Minister of Serbia, Prof. Dr. Đuro Macut, stated that the country’s energy situation is currently completely stable and under control, emphasizing that there will be no shortages.
“We are fully in control of the situation, and the energy sector is completely stable at this moment, with a plan to maintain it going forward,” Macut said in an interview with RTS.
He noted that the situation is being continuously analyzed and that discussions are ongoing within the team, involving the President of the Republic and all relevant ministries responsible for the sector.
Macut added that President Vučić is engaged on a daily basis and communicates with all participants in the process, ensuring confidence that Serbia will overcome the current situation.
“The state absolutely keeps the situation under control. Vučić’s work is fascinating—he communicates with all participants in the process, which ensures that we will overcome this situation. Even if a direct resolution is not reached with the current situation, we have a potential solution that will be used if all other options are exhausted,” Macut said.
“Even if no direct resolution comes from the current situation, we have a potential solution to employ if all other options are exhausted. Therefore, we are not without an exit strategy; we keep the situation under control. This is a very stable situation, and no one should worry about the future of energy in Serbia at this time,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
Macut stressed that supply levels are currently maintained and that no shortages are expected.
He highlighted that there are specific timelines and plans concerning the transformation of ownership and the future of NIS and the entire energy infrastructure.
“It’s not just about the refinery in Pančevo; it’s also about distribution centers and the distribution of energy resources. The system is very complex, somewhat slow-moving, but it must be reliable and secure. Therefore, supply is currently fully maintained, and we have continuity that is expected to remain strong through the end of January. During this period, we anticipate resolutions to the situation,” Macut explained.
Tangled situation around NIS: While the President is “ready for the refinery to stop,” Russia talks about friendship, and citizens face consequences
Macut added that Serbia is also awaiting a license from OFAC, expressing hope for a resolution to the current situation with NIS.
“I expect a favorable outcome, as well as the continuation of our safe policy and strategy toward a final solution,” Prime Minister Macut said.
Due to U.S. sanctions on NIS, the Pančevo refinery has halted operations, including the production of petroleum derivatives. Payment at NIS gas stations is also limited, now possible only via Dina cards or in cash.
Regarding gas supply, President Aleksandar Vučić stated on December 4 that he expects a short-term agreement with Russia. He previously gave Russia a deadline of Friday, December 5, to offer a contract, warning that Serbia would otherwise have to seek gas from alternative sources.
