Activist Suzana Jović, also known as the “woman in red”, was detained on Monday in a gym in Niš and brought to Belgrade due to events at the protest on May 23, which was also confirmed by her lawyer Jovan Rajić. Rajić says that Suzana is now free, but that she was questioned without a defense attorney.

Suzana Jović from Prokuplje, who was detained yesterday at her workplace in Niš, has been released from the “29. novembar” station. Her lawyer Jovan Rajić says that she was fined 90,000 dinars because she pushed a container at the rally in Belgrade.

However, Rajić says that several irregularities occurred.

“The inspector who introduced himself as Miloš Veljković, from the public order and peace unit at 29-ti, did not give us any detention order for Suzana. They held her during the night at the station completely unlawfully,” the lawyer stated.

He added that she was questioned without a defense attorney.

“Today when I came to the hearing before misdemeanor judge Potežica, I properly registered at the reception that I had arrived and that I wanted to attend the hearing in the capacity of defense counsel, the police officer informed me that the case files were late and to wait in the hall. After waiting for an hour and a half, Suzana appeared – with a 90 thousand dinar fine sewn up for her. They questioned her without a defense attorney, that is, they did not allow me access to my client and fined her in a summary proceeding,” he pointed out on X.

The Belgrade police did not respond to the question of Južne vesti regarding this case, and the police in Niš, as written in the text, said that they did not have such an action.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced today that members of the MUP, the Criminal Police Directorate, and the Crime Intelligence Service arrested Suzana Jović (37) and N. A. (47) due to grounds of suspicion that they participated in a larger-scale breach of public order and peace during the reported public gathering in Belgrade, held on May 23, 2026.

“By reviewing the recordings made by members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was determined that S. J. and N. A. actively participated in organizing and breaching public order and peace, namely in the form of overturning and setting fire to containers, throwing stones, shock bombs, and flares at police officers,” the MUP stated.
