Police and firefighters responded quickly, and the incident has been characterized as a targeted attack on the Jewish community. The Mayor of Amsterdam condemned the attack and expressed concern over the rise of antisemitism.
Last night, an explosion occurred on the exterior wall of a Jewish school in Buitenzveldert, Amsterdam.
Police and fire services reacted swiftly, and material damage was limited, according to NOS.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema described the incident as a targeted attack on the Jewish community and condemned it as a “cowardly act of aggression.”
She emphasized that schools must remain safe places for children and that Amsterdam must be secure for Jews, highlighting concerns about growing antisemitism.
Police confirmed that there are images showing the placement and detonation of the explosive device.
Due to previous incidents at Jewish institutions in Liège and Rotterdam, security at schools and institutions in Amsterdam has been further strengthened.
The Israel Information and Documentation Center on X reported that the logo seen in the video of the Amsterdam explosion belongs to the Islamic movement “Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia.”
This movement had claimed responsibility for the attack on a synagogue in Liège earlier in the week, NOS reported.
Because of prior incidents in Liège and Rotterdam, security measures have been reinforced at schools and institutions across Amsterdam.
In Rotterdam, four teenagers were arrested yesterday in connection with an explosion near another synagogue, while the investigation into the suspects’ possible plans and connections is ongoing.
