Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow today and that the talks will mainly concern energy issues. “I am going to ensure that Hungary’s energy supply is secured for the winter and the coming year at an affordable price,” Orban said in a video posted on Facebook. He recalled that he was in the US at the beginning of November, where he received an exemption from US sanctions on Russian oil from US President Donald Trump, which is valid for one year.
“We succeeded, which is excellent… now all we need is gas and oil, which we can buy from the Russians, so I am going there to ensure that Hungary’s energy supply is secured for the winter and for the coming year at an affordable price,” Orban wrote. Orban, who is one of the few European leaders close to both the American and Russian presidents, has not sought to diversify Hungary’s imports since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and relies heavily on Russian oil. This is Orban’s second trip to Moscow since last year. He is considered Putin’s closest partner in the European Union. A Hungarian investigative portal reported on the X network that Orban organized his trip to Moscow behind the backs of NATO allies and that he will discuss gas, oil, nuclear energy, and MOL’s purchase of a stake in the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS) with Putin.
