British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, confirming his decision during an address outside 10 Downing Street.
At the beginning of his speech, Starmer said that becoming Prime Minister two years ago was “the proudest moment of his life,” recalling that it marked the formation of the first Labour government in 14 years and the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history.
Speaking about his political journey, he noted that six years ago he took over a Labour Party that was, as he described it, in a difficult political, financial, and moral position. He added that many had claimed the party’s political story was over and that it would never again win a parliamentary majority.
“We proved them wrong,” Starmer declared, stating that his party had restored voters’ trust, carried out deep reforms, and once again become a political force capable of taking responsibility for governing the country.
However, in the key part of his address, he acknowledged that he no longer had sufficient support within the Parliamentary Labour Party to lead it into the next general election.
“I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to the question of whether I am the right person to lead it into the next electoral battle, and I accept that answer with dignity,” Starmer said.
He emphasized that throughout his time in office he had made decisions with the interests of the country and its citizens in mind, which is why he decided to step down as party leader.
Starmer also confirmed that he had spoken with King Charles III earlier that morning and informed him of his decision to resign.
His departure marks the end of one of the shortest premierships in modern British history and raises questions about who will take over the leadership of the Labour Party and form a new government.
