Several Serbian citizens have testified that police in European Union countries have been searching their cars at border crossings, as well as during police checks within EU countries, suspecting that large sums of cash are being carried out of Serbia.

They separately shared their experiences with the Beta agency regarding their encounters with police in Italy, Hungary, Austria, and Germany.

“On our way to Germany, the police stopped us several times to thoroughly search our car. When we asked them why they were doing this, since this had never happened before, they told us they had received reports that large amounts of cash were being smuggled out of Serbia,” said one Serbian citizen, who is working temporarily in Germany.

Another person shared a similar experience in Italy, where, on a short trip from Koper to Trieste, after crossing from Slovenia into Italy, the police stopped him twice and thoroughly searched his car looking for cash.

“They ransacked our car, removed the seats, the spare tire…” he said.

A third Serbian citizen mentioned having a similar experience at the border crossing with Hungary and then at two additional checkpoints in Austria.
