Israeli spies smuggled missiles and secretly planted explosive drones deep inside Iran during a series of covert operations preceding Friday’s deadly attack, before luring Iranian military leaders to a meeting to eliminate them.
Intelligence agents from Mossad, Israel’s foremost spy agency, began infiltrating the heart of Iran months ago to carry out a surprise attack aimed at destroying Iranian nuclear and military facilities, as well as eliminating a number of top military commanders.
According to Israeli security sources, the spy agency pre-positioned explosive drones inside Iran, setting the stage for major strikes. Agents also managed to smuggle precision weapons into central Iran, allowing Israel to attack Tehran’s defense systems from within.
“Operation Rising Lion” Unfolds
The covert operation, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” was ultimately executed through three separate actions in the early morning hours of Friday – with air strikes targeting precisely identified weapons and defense systems in Iran, an Israeli security source told The Post.
Command units deployed precision-guided weapons near Iranian surface-to-air (SAM) defense systems and targeted those systems. In the second phase of the operation, attack systems were deployed and technology was mounted on vehicles that were then launched towards Iranian air defense systems. The final phase targeted surface-to-surface missile launchers at a base outside Tehran, precisely when the explosive-laden drones were activated.
The unmanned aerial vehicles flew towards that base and destroyed the launchers which, according to Israeli sources, “posed a threat to Israel’s strategic and civilian targets.”
Sabotage operations enabled Israeli air strikes to destroy radars and other air defense systems. Nuclear facilities and uranium enrichment plants were also targeted. According to the Israeli military, approximately 200 aircraft participated in the initial assault, hitting about 100 targets.
The attack hit multiple locations, including Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, where black smoke could be seen rising into the sky. Later that morning, Israel announced it had also destroyed dozens of radar installations and surface-to-air missile launchers in western Iran.

High-Profile Casualties and Israeli Justification
The attacks killed several high-ranking Iranian officials – among them General Hossein Salami, commander of the Revolutionary Guard; Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces; Gholam Ali Rashid, head of the emergency command center; and Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Revolutionary Guard Aerospace Force.
According to an official speaking to Fox News, Israel managed to deceive several top commanders of the Iranian air force and lure them to a meeting – where they were subsequently eliminated.
“We conducted certain activities to get to know them better, and then we used that information to influence their behavior,” an Israeli official said. “We knew that would lead them to gather – but more importantly, we knew how to keep them there.” It was not immediately clear how Israel managed to entice high-ranking Iranian officials to gather in one place.
“Significant intelligence was gathered and surveillance was conducted to collect evidence against high-ranking members of the Iranian defense apparatus and nuclear scientists who were then eliminated,” the source told The Post. “All of this was executed in parallel with a covert operational campaign targeting Iran’s strategic missile arsenal.”
These unprecedented attacks appear to be the most significant blow Iran has suffered since the war with Iraq in the 1980s. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation, stating that the goal was to “set back” the Iranian threat to “Israel’s very existence.”
“If we don’t react now, we simply won’t exist anymore. We have learned the lessons of history. When an enemy says it intends to destroy you – believe it,” he stated. “When an enemy develops the capability to destroy you – stop it.” Iran quickly called the barrage of strikes a “declaration of war,” while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened “severe punishment,” and President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that “Israel will regret its foolishness.”
