“In our opinion, dialogue across society is now important,” stated the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the protests in Serbia.

Responding to a DW inquiry about the protests in Serbia, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that “the right to freedom of assembly and expression applies to every person.”

Call for Adherence to European Values

“As a candidate for EU accession, Serbia must be assessed based on how it handles fundamental European values and democratic principles such as critical expression, the application of the rule of law, and how much it respects human rights. People in Serbia have the right to freedom of expression – without fear of violence, intimidation, or arbitrary arrest. We call on all parties to refrain from violence and to de-escalate. In our opinion, dialogue across society is now important,” stated the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
