M. J. (70) died from burns and carbon monoxide poisoning in a fire that broke out yesterday in an open area in the Plavinac neighborhood of Smederevo, while, according to the latest information, a young man who tried to help him was also injured.
As confirmed to RTS by the Smederevo Police Department, the autopsy results showed that the 70-year-old man died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning and burns.
According to unofficial information, the young man who tried to pull the man out of the fire suffered burns and was treated following the incident.
The fire broke out on August 17 in the Plavinac area and engulfed around 50 ares of low vegetation and dry grass. The relevant emergency services arrived at the scene, while the police conducted an investigation to determine how the fire started.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Smederevo also issued a statement, saying that, in cooperation with the police and the Department for Emergency Situations, it is taking all necessary measures to establish all the facts and circumstances of the incident.
At the order of the duty public prosecutor, an autopsy of the victim’s body was carried out, while the collection and analysis of evidence is ongoing. Once all the information has been compiled, a decision will be made on further action.
