SADNESS IN BAJINA BAŠTA: Sava, abbot of Rača Monastery, beloved by the people and his fellow monks, has passed away!

Longtime brother and abbot of Rača Monastery, Archimandrite Sava Ristić, passed away on August 16 at the age of 88. He spent more than six decades at Rača Monastery, and during the final years of his life, he mostly served at the monastery’s metochion on Tara, dedicated to All Serbian Saints.

On the day of his repose, following the Holy Liturgy and Holy Communion, Archimandrite Sava spent time speaking with the faithful and guests. In the evening hours, he felt weak, and after several hours he passed away, according to a statement from the Diocese of Žiča.

Archimandrite Sava was born on May 14, 1939, in the village of Manastirica near Petrovac na Mlavi. He began his monastic life in 1954 at Vitovnica Monastery, and two years later moved to Dračа Monastery, where he was tonsured by his spiritual father, Abbot Hrizostom Pajić.

He later served with him at Rudenica and Rača monasteries. In Rača, he was ordained a hieromonk in 1963 and appointed as the monastery’s deputy abbot, and that same year he became the parish priest of the monastery parish in Rača and Solotuša.

Following the repose of Archimandrite Hrizostom, he was appointed abbot of Rača Monastery in 1995. During his tenure, he continued the work of his spiritual father and made a significant contribution to the improvement and development of the monastery complex.

He completed the construction of a large residence with a treasury and library, while a fishpond for breeding trout and carp was also built on the monastery’s channels and watercourse. The water potential of the monastery’s watercourse was also used to build a small hydroelectric power plant, the statement from the Diocese of Žiča adds.

Since 2016, Archimandrite Sava had also spent most of his time serving at the metochion of Rača Monastery on Tara. It was there that he celebrated the Holy Liturgy on the day of his repose.

Archimandrite Sava will be remembered as one of the longest-serving monks and abbots of Rača Monastery, where he spent more than 63 years as a brother and abbot.
