Students from blocked higher education institutions announced a protest titled “An Index is Stronger than a Baton” for today, September 8, at 2 PM, in front of the Government of Serbia.
“On Monday, everything stops. See you there,” the students stated.
The students published an illustration of the protest plan on Instagram, in which the first point is the Government of Serbia, followed by the Palace of Justice, the building of the Unit for the Security of Specific Individuals and Facilities, and finally the Internal Control Sector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Last week, rallies titled “Citizens Against Blockades” were held across Serbia. At the same time, counter-rallies were also held in parallel, and in some cities, supporters of the Progressives, who mostly came in an organized manner from other places, were dispersed and forced to abandon their speeches and the entire protest program. On Sunday evening, the Ministry of Internal Affairs also announced how many SNS supporters were at the organized protest against blockades across Serbia the previous day.
On Sunday afternoon, rallies of SNS supporters were held in many Serbian cities: Niš, Šabac, Čačak, Kosjerić, Kragujevac, Novi Sad, and at the same time in some of them, the two groups found themselves facing each other.
In Niš, the protest of SNS supporters was on one side of the Nišava river, while the gathered citizens in the counter-protest were on the other side of the river, so there was no “mixing.” There were individual incidents, but in most cities, the situation calmed down by 10 PM, and the citizens dispersed.
