STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING IN BELGRADE SEND A MESSAGE: “If the rector rejects the request to postpone the start of the academic year, blockades will follow until the elections are over!”

Students in blockade at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering voted at a plenary session that the faculty should not operate during the election campaign. As Nova.rs has learned, they are waiting for other faculties to make their positions known, after which they will jointly address the Rectorate with a request to allow this. If Rector Vladan Đokić rejects their request, the students will launch blockades until the elections are over.

Students in blockade at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade decided that it would be best for lectures and practical classes not to be held at the faculty during the election campaign, so that they can fully devote themselves to campaigning ahead of the upcoming elections.

They voted on this at a plenary session, and, according to our information, they proposed the same decision to other faculties in Belgrade.

“Our goal is not to put anyone at risk, nor to prevent freshmen from starting their studies and getting to know their professors and courses. We simply need peace and a clear focus on the election campaign. However, if our request is rejected by the Rectorate, we will have to block the operation of the faculty until the elections are over,” one of the students said.

He added that Rector Vladan Đokić would be told that, in the event of the suspension of classes, exam periods would be able to proceed normally.

“In our letter, we will point out that students will be able to take their exams normally during the September and October exam periods. So, we will only request that the start of the academic year be postponed because of the upcoming elections,” he reiterated.

As for the other faculties, they will consider this idea in the coming days.

Specifically, students at the Faculty of Organizational Sciences have a plenary session tonight at 6 p.m., and one of the items on the agenda is precisely the suspension of activities at the faculty or a blockade, if it comes to that.

At the neighboring Faculty of Political Sciences, this item has not yet been placed on the agenda of the session, which, students say, does not mean that it will not be.

Several other Belgrade faculties are also considering the same issue, and they will announce their final decisions on their official social media profiles.

As a reminder, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić called snap parliamentary elections and scheduled them for October 25.

Students in blockade soon announced that the Citizens’ Group “Student List – Students Are Winning” had been formed.
