Students in the blockade of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade announced that plainclothes inspectors followed their colleagues and citizens, intercepted them, searched them without a warrant, and took them to the Zemun Police Station, after which they released them – all because of, as they stated, a “banner.”

“You detain three people for a ‘banner,’ seize a car, paint, sprays, and a sewing machine, and in the end, you release them all,” the students stated on the social network X.

As they added, “if this is a fight against crime, thread and needle are next on the wanted list.”

“Before we were stopped last night, over five cars were following us, and there were several patrols in the blocks of New Belgrade. We were stopped by plainclothes inspectors (a civilian vehicle, which had also followed us for about 500m before stopping). They showed their badges. They asked for our ID cards, but we received no explanation as to why we were stopped or why they were identifying us. They asked us to get out of the car so they could inspect it, because they were performing a ‘routine check’ (narcotics, weapons…). Then they said we were waiting for the traffic police so that the driver of the car, which has now been seized from him – again without explanation – could perform a breathalyzer test. The traffic police did not appear even after twenty minutes of waiting. After that, the plainclothes inspector began to explain to us that as far as he was concerned we were ‘clean,’ but that a tip-off had arrived (that we were ‘wanted’) and that they had to take us to the Zemun PS. There is neither a clear warrant nor a reason for the detention. We did not have the right to inform anyone of what was happening. Nothing illegal/unlawful/prohibited was found in the car. The biggest problems were: a sewing machine, bedding, and a few sprays, which remained at the station. A lawyer soon arrived at the station, because in the meantime it was somehow discovered that we had been detained. Again, there is no clear reason why we were detained, but we were asked to give statements in the capacity of citizens. Since we have nothing to hide, as we were not doing nor did we possess anything prohibited, we gave statements in the presence of a lawyer and were released after that. What was also left behind was the car so that they could search it again, even though it was previously determined during the stop that there was nothing in it. The car was purchased in Serbia, the owner is the first owner, it is fully functional with all accompanying and valid documents. The stop was around 11:45 PM. Departure for the station about an hour later. We left the station around 3:15 AM,” a female student who wished to remain anonymous told N1.
