Five people were arrested in an operation over suspicions of abuses at the Elementary School “Prva vojvođanska brigada” in Novi Sad, while police are intensively searching for another suspect, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in that city announced. The school director O. S. is suspected of having abused his official position in the period from 2017 to 2018 and ordered the payment of 2,641,499.80 dinars for works on the school building, even though he knew those works had not been carried out.
The operation was conducted on March 9 in cooperation between the Special Department for Suppression of Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad and the Criminal Police Directorate, Department for the Fight Against Corruption.
As stated in the announcement, O.S., the director of the Elementary School “Prva vojvođanska brigada”, was arrested on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of abuse of official position. In addition to him, Đ.K, Z.T, N.R. and N.L. were also arrested, who are suspected of assisting in the commission of that criminal offense.

According to the prosecutor’s office, there is suspicion that O.S. in the period from 2017 to 2018 abused his official position and ordered the payment of 2,641,499.80 dinars for works on the school building, even though he knew those works had not been carried out.
It is suspected that the other suspects, as persons engaged by the business entities that carried out the works, helped him by preparing, signing and certifying technical documentation of false content, on the basis of which the disputed payment was made.
By order of the Special Department for Suppression of Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, the suspects O.S, Đ.K, Z.T, N.R. and N.L. were detained for up to 48 hours. Within that period they will be brought in and questioned at the prosecutor’s office.
