The mayor of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, has once again warned residents to evacuate following repeated Russian attacks on the city’s heating systems, the BBC reports.

He notes that 1,940 multi-story residential buildings in the capital are still without heating after Russian attacks on January 9 and 20.

“Let me be open. This is an extremely difficult situation and it could get worse. If anyone can leave the city and move somewhere where there is electricity and heating, do not rule it out,” Klitschko said, also advising residents to stock up on basic necessities.

Across the city, “resilience points” are being set up—tents intended for citizens whose homes are without electricity and heating, as temperatures remain around -10 degrees Celsius.

Ukraine is facing an acute energy crisis after months of relentless Russian attacks on its infrastructure. Zelensky says Moscow is deliberately exploiting the extremely cold winter, leaving tens of thousands of people across Ukraine without electricity, heating, or running water.

Most of the country’s conventional power plants have been hit or damaged in Russian air strikes, and Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine’s largest power plant, has been under Russian control since the beginning of the war. The future of the site is one of the most critical points of any possible future peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
