A federal officer shot an illegal immigrant from Venezuela in the leg in Minneapolis after the man allegedly attacked him during an attempted traffic stop.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. local time, according to NBC News.

“In an attempt to avoid arrest, the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle and struck a parked car. The suspect then fled on foot,” the statement said.

Two People Intervene to Help Immigrant

The report adds that the immigrant attacked the officer after he caught up on foot, resisting arrest, and that two people came out of a nearby house and assaulted the officer with a snow shovel and a broom handle.

“While the officer was attacked by two individuals lying in ambush, the original attacker freed himself and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom handle. Fearing for his life and safety, as he was being attacked by three people, the officer fired defensive shots to protect himself. The original attacker was hit in the leg,” the statement said.

The officer and the man who was shot are in the hospital, while the other two individuals are in custody.

The shooting occurred about 19 miles from the location where an ICE officer fatally shot U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good last week, which sparked large protests following the latest incident.

Minneapolis Calls on ICE to Leave the State Immediately

City officials in Minneapolis urged calm, noting that the hospitalized man’s injuries are not life-threatening.

Immediately after the shooting, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz addressed residents, urging them to document “abuses” against Minnesota residents by recording immigration agents, and called on U.S. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to “end this occupation.”

In a social media post, the City of Minneapolis demanded that federal immigration authorities leave the city and state immediately.

“We stand with our immigrant and refugee communities—know that you have our full support,” the city stated.

This month, the Department of Homeland Security sent more than 2,000 federal agents to Minnesota, more than three times the number of officers in the Minneapolis Police Department.
