Mountaineers from the Niš association “Stazama slavnih predaka” (“Paths of Glorious Ancestors”), who are planning to walk the route to Corfu along which the Serbian army retreated in 1915–16, have been banned from entering Kosovo for one year.
Milan Lapčević from the seven-member group of mountaineers said that the Kosovo police intercepted and checked them several times on the road from Gračanica to the border with Montenegro, and that at the “Kula” crossing toward Rožaje they were detained for two hours and informed that they were banned from entering Kosovo and Metohija for the next year.
They set off yesterday from the Peć Patriarchate on a 200-kilometer march.
“The first day of the march was a true replica of those difficult days 110 years ago, because cold rain poured all night and morning, and then turned into heavy, wet snow and a real blizzard. Snow has been falling without interruption; on Čakor there is more than 70 centimeters of it, but when the goals are lofty and the will is steel-strong, obstacles are only passing stumbles. We are moving on,” Lapčević said.
Seven mountaineers from Niš set out on the march in order to “remind the public in Serbia of the sacrifice our ancestors made while retreating across Albania,” during which more than 240,000 Serbian soldiers and civilians perished.
Their destination is Skadar, where they will visit the Serbian cemetery and pay tribute to the fallen, and on January 15 they will go to Corfu and attend an academy marking 110 years since the landing of the Serbian army.
They will go to the island of Vido on January 16 to lay wreaths at the “Blue Tomb.”
The association “Stazama slavnih predaka” organized a march ten years ago as well, on the centenary of the retreat of the Serbian army across Albania.
