In a shooting outside a church in Salt Lake City, in the U.S. state of Utah, two people were killed and six others wounded last night, police said.
The attack occurred in the parking lot of a Mormon church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). At the time of the incident, dozens of people were attending a funeral. All of the victims were adults.
Police said they do not believe the attacker had anything against a specific religion, nor do they believe the armed attack was random.
“We do not believe this was a targeted attack against a faith or anything like that,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd.

The headquarters of the Mormon Church is located in Salt Lake City, and about half of Utah’s 3.5 million residents are followers of that faith. Churches like the one where the attack took place are found throughout the state.
The Mormon Church has been on heightened alert since last month, when a former Marine opened fire at a church in the state of Michigan, killed four people, and set the building on fire.
The FBI determined that his motive was hostility toward that religion.
