The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday released a large batch of documents from investigations into the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (Epstein files), following months of Congressional pressure and the passage of a law requiring the administration to publish them.
The decision comes amid political conflicts within the Republican Party and dissatisfaction among some of President Donald Trump’s most loyal supporters, who accused his administration of deliberately delaying the release of materials linked to Epstein.
Alongside the documents, the Department of Justice issued a warning that “all reasonable efforts” had been made to protect the identities of victims, while acknowledging that some personal information might be inadvertently disclosed.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that hundreds of thousands of documents were released in this wave, but the archive is not yet complete. He announced that additional hundreds of thousands of pages will be published in the coming weeks, after further privacy checks to protect victims.
Trump had previously attempted to persuade Republicans in Congress to oppose the law, warning that releasing sensitive investigative materials could set a dangerous precedent. However, the law passed with a large majority, and Trump eventually signed it.
Despite this, some of Trump’s supporters continue to claim that authorities are covering up Epstein’s connections to powerful people and the circumstances of his 2019 death in a New York jail, which was officially ruled a suicide while he awaited trial for human trafficking and sexual abuse of minors.
During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised to declassify Epstein documents, but he is now trying to distance himself from the affair and focus on issues such as rising living costs ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Particular attention has been drawn to documents previously released by House Democrats, including emails in which Epstein allegedly claimed Trump “knew about the girls,” without further clarification. Republicans later released other emails claiming Trump visited Epstein’s house multiple times but “never received a massage.”
Shortly afterward, Trump directed the Department of Justice to investigate Epstein’s connections with former Democratic President Bill Clinton and JPMorgan Bank.
The latest batch of documents includes court records mentioning Trump in connection with an alleged meeting with a fourteen-year-old girl during the 1990s. According to these documents, Epstein allegedly introduced the girl to Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, reportedly nudging Trump with his elbow and joking, “She’s a good one, right?”
