Her Royal Highness Princess Danica Karađorđević, one of the most discreet and dignified figures on the domestic public scene, revealed an unexpectedly large number of details from her private life—one that is rarely seen, even when the spotlight is on her—in an exclusive interview for the Romanian weekly Libertatea.
“Women today carry too much on their shoulders. When I feel I’m losing balance, I retreat into silence. Silence is my luxury,” the princess admits, revealing a gentle and vulnerable side the public has not had the chance to hear before.
A home filled with tradition and small family rituals
Although she is part of the royal family, Danica emphasizes that very simple, warm and traditional values rule in their home.
In the interview she reveals that she kneads the Christmas česnica herself, while Filip and their son Stefan eagerly wait to find the coin. The family goes together to gather the badnjak, and they make an effort to celebrate the holidays “exactly as our ancestors did.”
“Materice, Oci, Detinci—everything is celebrated. These are the moments that bind the family together. Tradition is our anchor,” says Princess Danica.
The return of Materice to the Royal Court
The princess also revealed her great personal mission: to bring back the festive celebration of Materice at the Royal Court, just as Queen Maria once did.
“That is a holiday that celebrates the woman, the mother, the family. I would love to revive that holiday, because I think that today, in this world, its symbolism and family values are needed more than ever.”
Although she is a designer and artist by profession, Princess Danica says that motherhood is what has shaped her deepest self.
“I connect art and motherhood. Children require creativity, patience and time, and I am blessed to be able to spend my time with them.”
She stresses that the most important thing to her is to raise her son Stefan and daughter Marija in the spirit of tradition, family warmth and the values that preserve the identity of a nation.
A visit to Kosovo that marked her forever
One of the strongest moments in the interview is the princess’s testimony about her visit to the monasteries in Kosovo.
“It was an emotional experience. Sadness, pride, belonging. That encounter changed me.”
She admits that especially there, in meeting people who live in isolated communities, she fully understood “how important it is to preserve who we are.”
Love as a pillar: “Filip has a mission, and mine is to stand by him”
In one of the most tender parts of the conversation, the princess speaks about her role in her relationship with her husband Filip.
“Filip has an important mission, and mine is to accompany him, support him and protect our home. That is the way I contribute to both my family and my homeland. And in that, I have his complete support.”
For her, the strength of family begins within the marriage, and then extends to the family and children.
Her message to other women is simple and powerful:
“Find your silence. That is where your strength is born.”
