Professor Aleksandar Kavčić, known for his work at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United States and his philanthropic initiatives in Serbia, is one of the individuals after whom a newly endowed chair at a prestigious American university has been named.

Professor Carolyn Rosé of the Language Technologies Institute and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute has been appointed to the Kavčić–Moura Professorship, a chair bearing the names of Professor Kavčić and Professor José Moura, in recognition of their contributions to the development of research and education.

This endowed chair will provide Professor Rosé with additional support for research in the area of collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence, with a special focus on cybersecurity and data science.

According to a Carnegie Mellon statement, Professor Rosé has been recognized for work that combines theoretical insights from psychology, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis with advanced computational models. The new chair will provide her with additional support for research in the field of human-AI collaboration, especially in the domain of cybersecurity and data science.

SHE WILL LEAD THE CHAIR BEARING KAVČIĆ’S NAME: Professor Carolyn Rosé

“It is a particular honor for me to hold a title that bears the names of Professors Aleksandar Kavčić and José Moura. Professor Kavčić is well known today for his work in Serbia, where through his foundation he provides free textbooks for schools, while Professor Moura collaborates with him and others on the development of data science education at Carnegie Mellon,” Rosé stated.

Professor Aleksandar Kavčić commented on this occasion:

“I am extremely pleased that Professor Carolyn Rosé recognizes the work that we, together with colleagues, have supported through the Kavčić–Moura Professorship. This chair represents not only recognition for outstanding research in the field of computer science, but also an opportunity to support young researchers and enhance education in the areas of artificial intelligence and data science. I look forward to future projects and collaborations that will contribute to the development of technology and education, both at Carnegie Mellon and globally.”

The name Kavčić–Moura Professorship also confirms the active academic role of Professor Aleksandar Kavčić at Carnegie Mellon, where he has been engaged for many years within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The very name of the chair represents the highest form of university recognition and is awarded to scholars who have made lasting contributions to the development of research and education.

Professor Kavčić, also known for his philanthropic initiatives in Serbia, thus remains recognized as part of the academic tradition of one of the world’s most respected universities, and his name will now be carried by a chair that will continue to support research at the crossroads of technology, education, and society.
