Serbian citizen Alon Ohel, who was held captive by Hamas since October 7, 2023, and was recently released, has undergone a successful operation in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva.
As announced by the hospital where Ohel was treated, the Serbian-Israeli citizen had successful eye surgery and an orthopedic operation during which shrapnel was removed from his shoulder, the Israeli portal Ynet reported, as conveyed by Tanjug.
It was stated that the complex eye operation was performed to reconstruct the eye structure and improve vision, which deteriorated during the long period of captivity in difficult conditions and without adequate medical care.
The director of the hospital’s ophthalmology department, Irit Bahar, stated that it was a “complex and unusual eye operation that should have been performed two years ago.”
“We removed several pieces of shrapnel and implanted an artificial lens. The operation went successfully, and in the coming days, we will know the degree of vision improvement,” Bahar said, as reported by RTS.
Ohel, who also holds Serbian citizenship, was kidnapped by a Hamas group on October 7, 2023, from a music festival in Gaza, where he spent two years in captivity.
He was released on October 13 along with 19 other hostages, as part of a truce that came into force during the conflict.
