At the foot of Maglič, a true small international community is located, where volunteers from all over the world live and work in harmony with nature in Magličgrad. One of them is Diego from Argentina, who has already been nicknamed “Grandpa” by his colleagues. This young man traveled halfway across the world, arriving from Argentina to Serbia, and is now enjoying our country. He exchanged his factory job for volunteering and says that Serbia has become his second home.

“I worked in a factory in Argentina for four years, but that job didn’t fulfill me. I wanted to change my life, to see the world, and to help people. When I found the volunteer platform, I knew it was my path. I have been here for three months and I feel at home,” Diego tells RINA.

His nickname “Grandpa” arose by chance, but today he wears it with a smile because, as he says, “it reminds him that simplicity and closeness among people are the most important values.”

“During my stay in Western Serbia, I help the local community, I learn about Serbian culture, and here I realized that goodness is actually a universal language that everyone understands. The people here are warm, sincere, and full of life. I love Serbia and plan to return again as soon as I can after volunteering,” adds the smiling Argentinian.

The unique community of Magličgrad was established three years ago thanks to the enthusiasm of the young archaeologist Miloš Sretenović, who, precisely thanks to volunteers from all over the world, created a true tourist attraction that an increasing number of tourists visit.

“The essence of everything is a return to nature and the formation of a specific self-sustaining settlement where we would live as it was once. A specific camp has been set up at the foot of Maglič, in whose construction only volunteers from all over the world, who apply through the ‘workaway.info’ website, participated. When they arrive in this ‘valley of centuries,’ they volunteer for about five hours a day; the rest of the time they have to enjoy the nature and landscapes, because that is why they actually came. They are mostly environmental activists and nature lovers,” says Miloš.

Basic conditions such as electricity, water, internet, and toilets are provided for all visitors. What differentiates this place from others is that food is served in cauldrons, and the menu consists of ingredients they exclusively find themselves in the surrounding area, such as porcini mushrooms, chanterelles, nettles, and the occasional trout.
