“The person who actually received the Nobel Prize called me today and said, ‘I accept this in your honor because you truly deserved it,’” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, without mentioning the name of the Venezuelan opposition politician.

“It was very nice of her to do that. I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me,’ although I think maybe she would have,” he added, according to Hina.

Machado is a fierce opponent of Maduro

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday that Machado received the award for her “tireless efforts in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”

In her first reaction, Machado said that she dedicated the award to “the suffering of the Venezuelan people” and to Trump “for his decisive support” of their cause. Trump said that he “helped her along the way.”

The 58-year-old Machado is considered a unifying force in Venezuela’s opposition and a fierce critic of the authoritarian president Nicolás Maduro, who has been in power since 2013. She ran for president in 2023 but was excluded from the following year’s elections due to alleged irregularities.

White House: Trump has the heart of a humanitarian

The Nobel Peace Prize is an important political award. In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly emphasized that he deserves the prize, claiming he ended seven wars in just seven months. This week, at his initiative, a preliminary agreement was reached in the Middle East conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

At the same time, critics accuse Trump of undermining international cooperation based on multilateral treaties, agreements, and values. It was unclear whether he was nominated in time for this year’s award. The nomination deadline was January 31, only 11 days after Trump returned to the White House.

Following the announcement of Machado’s victory, White House communications director Steven Cheung stated that “the Nobel Committee has proven they put politics above peace.”

“President Trump will continue to make peace deals, end wars, and save lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains by the sheer force of his will,” Cheung wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
