The First Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade will, as part of the investigation into whether pyrotechnic or other generally dangerous weapons were used during the protest on March 15th, hear statements from citizens who submitted their information to non-governmental organizations by April 3rd, those who were present at the event commemorating the victims of the canopy collapse and possess lists of experienced discomfort.

This institution also stated that they have requested all available data on the event from the Ombudsman, i.e., the collected information on individuals who sustained injuries.

When asked whether the prosecutor’s office will investigate the device in the photograph shown at a press conference two days after the controversial event by the Vice President of the Party of Freedom and Justice, Marinika Tepić, her claims about the existence of sonic weapons and the statement given to the media by a member of the Gendarmerie claiming “that the entire platoon saw a ‘sonic weapon’ next to the assembly,” as well as the device shown to the media by the Minister of Police, Ivica Dačić, it was stated that “at this stage of the proceedings, they are unable to disclose details of the procedure.”

At the protest on March 15th, in King Milan Street in Belgrade, two minutes before the end of the fifteen-minute silence in memory of the victims in Novi Sad, an unusual sound was heard, which caused panic among the gathered citizens.

The First Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade subsequently announced that during the controversial event at the protest, a “sonic weapon” was not used, having “unequivocally determined that a sonic weapon was not used, based on reports received from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the Security Intelligence Agency (BIA).”

Regarding the claims that a “sonic weapon” was used during the protest on March 15th, the European Commission (EC) also reacted, calling on the authorities in Serbia to investigate whether that or a similar weapon was used during the protest.

In addition to the EC, the event also drew the attention of the European Court of Human Rights, which on March 24th requested Serbia to state whether prohibited means were used against protesters at the Belgrade protest on March 15th and what the legal basis was for the alleged use of such weapons.

The same court subsequently informed civil society organizations that on March 31st it received Serbia’s response regarding allegations of the possible use of sonic weapons, the Belgrade Center for Human Rights announced.

It also called on non-governmental organizations collecting citizen testimonies to submit comments on the state’s response by April 8th, and on Serbia to submit its comments within the same deadline on the submission by which the organizations informed the Court about the health status of the applicants.

The students in the blockade issued a new, fifth demand, in which they request “the implementation of a detailed investigation by the competent authorities to determine all circumstances and responsibilities related to the phenomenon that caused fear and panic on March 15th along King Milan Street, during the peaceful protest and 15 minutes of silence in memory of the tragic victims in Novi Sad.”

The statement says that on March 15, 2025, during a peaceful protest and commemoration of the victims in Novi Sad, a phenomenon of unknown origin occurred, which caused fear and panic among citizens.
