“They’re both gone,” said a grandfather from Loznica, who had been anxiously waiting for them to visit him on the second day of the Saint Luke’s Day celebration. Little girls Tina (9) and Sara (5), who were at the Novi Sad Railway Station with their grandfather at the unfortunate time of the incident, tragically succumbed to their injuries, as reported by Kurir, according to members of their family.

“They’re both gone,” Branko Matić, a pensioner from Loznica, told Kurir. He had been anxiously waiting for them to visit him on the second day of the Saint Luke’s Day celebration.

Branko Matić, a pensioner from Loznica, had spoken to Kurir on the day of the great tragedy that shook all of Serbia, expressing his fears and hopes that the little ones would recover. Although prepared for a long battle, when they heard the news last night that they were seriously injured but alive, they clung tightly to that glimmer of hope. However, just a few hours later, their worst fears were realized – one family lost their beloved girls.

Yesterday, this family had already received terrible news when they were told that the girls’ grandfather from Novi Sad, with whom they had been waiting for the train, had died. From that moment on, they all waited in tears outside the Novi Sad Emergency Center, hoping for news of Sara and Tina. Unfortunately, three times on that dreadful November 1st, they were plunged into darkness.

As a reminder, around noon yesterday, the glass terrace of the old Novi Sad Railway Station collapsed. At the time of the collapse, a large number of people were sitting on benches underneath, waiting for their trains. Unfortunately, everything collapsed in just a few moments, and for hours afterward, rescue workers were trying to extract survivors and those who had lost their lives in the rubble. The death toll soon rose to 14.
