Elon Musk has been in the news for many reasons lately. Regardless of the topic, Musk will always be most recognized for founding an electric car company and turning it into a global giant.

“Tesla” has become synonymous not only with Musk’s company but with the electric vehicle world in general. However, “Tesla” wasn’t the first name he wanted to give his company. In fact, Musk didn’t even own the name; it came from another source.

In a short YouTube video titled “Take Impulse”, Musk talks about how he eventually bought the name from a guy in Sacramento. The guy had come up with the name and already owned it, but Musk was determined to get it.

He initially offered the guy $75,000, but the person in Sacramento didn’t want to sell the name at all, according to Hotkars. Musk then devised a strategy to get the name “Tesla.” He decided to get the nicest, sweetest, and kindest guy in the company to go and sit on the guy’s doorstep until he sold him the name. This was a guy nobody could get mad at, so Musk figured there was no way the strategy could end in disaster.

As it turned out, Musk was right, and eventually, the guy from Sacramento decided to sell him the name. This meant he could now continue using the name Tesla.

A Tribute to Nikola Tesla

Tesla Motors, now known as Tesla Inc., was first created in 2003 by Musk and his team. The name itself is actually a tribute to the electrical engineer Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American innovator best known for his contributions to the creation of what we now call the alternating current power supply system. So, the name has a certain significance and isn’t just a random word pulled out of thin air, as many people might think, Hotkars continues.

Tesla experimented with electric motors and electric generators, ideas that were far ahead of his time. The Serbian scientist envisioned a world where energy could be transmitted wirelessly and electric power was available to everyone without limitations.

Musk has repeatedly stated that he admires Tesla’s genius and his efforts to create a better world through science. The name “Tesla” therefore represents a symbol of innovation, progress, and the fight against outdated technologies that pollute the environment.

Although Musk did not found Tesla Motors himself – the company was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning – his takeover of leadership in 2004 and his vision led to the company’s global success. Musk became the company’s largest shareholder in February 2004 after investing $6.5 million in the company. It wasn’t until 2009 that “Tesla” would begin producing its first car.

Starting with the Model S sedan in 2012, followed by the Model X SUV in 2015, more and more vehicles like the Cybertruck are now coming out of Tesla factories, and the company has gained fame over the years.

Tesla Model 3: The best-selling electric car in the world

Tesla launched the Model 3 sedan in 2017, and it has become a key part of the company’s current success. The Model 3 has become the best-selling electric car in the world, while in June 2021, the Model 3 became the first electric car to be sold in one million units worldwide.

In 2021 alone, the company’s global sales reached 936,222 cars, a gigantic 87% increase over the previous year. Total sales since the summer of 2022 are around three million cars.

Things are different now in the world of electric vehicles, as many of the world’s largest automakers are now involved in EV action and want to take the “Tesla” crown. And when rivals like Hyundai offer equally good, if not better products, for a fraction of the price, it will be quite difficult for “Tesla” to stay on the throne.

But that’s Elon Musk, and who knows what he has up his sleeve next, the portal concludes.
