The football players of Red Star, on this day exactly 34 years ago, achieved historic success by winning the European champion title.
On that May 29, 1991, the red-and-whites defeated Olympique de Marseille at the Sveti Nikola stadium in Bari in the final of the then Champions Cup after penalties 5:3, after it was 0:0 after 120 minutes of play.
Until the final, Red Star eliminated Grasshoppers (1:1, 4:1), Glasgow Rangers (3:0, 1:1), Dynamo Dresden (3:0, 2:1), and Bayern Munich (2:1, 2:2).
Captain and goalkeeper Stevan Stojanovic saved the first penalty in the shootout from Manuel Amoros, and everyone from Red Star was precise (Prosinecki, Binic, Belodedic, Mihajlovic, and Pancev).
Red Star played in the lineup: Stojanovic, Jugovic, Marovic, Sabanadzovic, Belodedic, Najdoski, Prosinecki, Mihajlovic, Pancev, Savicevic (Stosic), Binic.
Dusko Radinovic, a regular until the final, was absent due to an injury.
The coach of the team was Ljupko Petrovic, who surprised everyone in the final with a defensive tactic, despite the fact that his team had previously played offensively and efficiently.
It turned out that he was right and Red Star won the most important trophy in European football on penalties.
Red Star will traditionally mark the historic success today at the Rajko Mitic stadium.
