Serbian judoka Mina Gačić triumphed in the under-52 kg category, while the Serbian national team won a total of five medals at the competition in Hungary.
Serbian judoka Mina Gačić, a member of Crvena zvezda, won the gold medal at the Junior European Cup held this weekend in the Hungarian city of Paks. In the under-52 kg category, Gačić defeated Rima Burihane of Canada 2-0 (two yuko) in the final after four minutes of competition, bringing Serbia its most valuable medal at the tournament.
On the first day of the competition, Marko Jorgić and Veljko Simić won bronze medals in the under-66 kg category. On the second day, in addition to Gačić’s gold, Natalija Prolić of Partizan Belgrade claimed silver in the under-48 kg category. Prolić was defeated in the final by Russia’s Sofia Zakharova, who won by ippon after 3:59 minutes of competition, after the Serbian representative had previously recorded two victories.
Serbia’s other bronze medal was won by Dušan Grahovac of Crvena zvezda in the under-81 kg category. In the bronze medal match, he defeated Canada’s Artem Neyolov with an ippon after 3:21 minutes. Grahovac fought a total of five bouts during the tournament and recorded four victories.
Nemanja Simić (under 100 kg) and Mateja Borojević (over 100 kg) came within one step of winning medals, losing their bronze medal matches to finish in fifth place. Petar Novaković (over 100 kg) finished seventh.
With these results, Serbian judo continues to demonstrate consistent success on the international junior stage, while winning five medals will provide additional motivation for the upcoming challenges facing the country’s young athletes.
