The Serbian Orthodox Church and the faithful celebrate the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, one of the greatest Christian holidays. It is known among the people as Velika Gospojina, a holiday for mothers and children.

The Mother of God outlived her son, continued his mission, and was a witness to many glorious events. Until the end of her life, she lived in Jerusalem, surrounded by the attention of the apostles and the first Christian community.

Just as the archangel Gabriel once told her that she would give birth to the son of God, he now informed her that she would pass away on this day. She ascended into heaven and “handed over her spirit into the hands of the Savior.”

According to historical sources, the Mother of God lived for 60, according to others 72 years.

The celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God was established in 528, in memory of the victory over the Persians. In Greece and Romania, this is also a national holiday. It is preceded by a two-week fast. It is the feast day of the town of Pirot and the Belgrade municipality of Barajevo.

According to the customary calendar, no chores are done in or around the house today.

The Međugospojinci, or Međudnevnica, also begin, which are the days between Velika Gospojina and Mala Gospojina, on September 21. They are considered the best time for picking medicinal herbs. It is also believed that eggs collected during this period are of the highest quality and remain fresh for a long time.

Women should not start new chores, but only continue what has been started.
