Orthodox believers today, September 21, celebrate the holiday dedicated to the birth of the most holy Theotokos, better known as Little Lady Day. Many customs are associated with this holiday, and women in particular celebrate and respect it.

In 2025, it falls on a Sunday, which makes it even more festive as believers will attend liturgies and celebrate this day in a family and prayerful spirit.

According to tradition, Saint Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Theotokos, had a daughter in their later years. The Theotokos was born in Nazareth, and at the age of three she was taken to the temple in Jerusalem, and at the age of seven she began to participate in prayers, worship and reading the Holy Scriptures, as written in the traditions.

Certain customs have been associated with this joyful holiday since ancient times. Most often it is a day of celebration, happiness, family gathering, and some families in Serbia also celebrate Little Lady Day as their patron saint day. It was customary for family members to dress nicely, celebrate, socialize and spread the energy of love and peace.

Another old custom is that on this holiday one should not do physical work, both outside the house and at home, but the day should be spent in peace, prayer and celebration. On the holiday of Little Lady Day, it was believed that one should not start new jobs, but should postpone everything for the following days.

On this day, celebrations and fairs were once organized throughout Serbia, and some places have preserved this custom to this day. Also, our ancestors believed that if the sky is clear on this holiday, the sun will warm us during autumn and winter. On Little Lady Day, many people plan and schedule weddings, because according to old beliefs, couples who get engaged or married on this day have a special blessing.
