Russian President Vladimir Putin once again criticized the West, saying it had “let the genie out of the bottle” by making decisions that, in his view, were not in accordance with the United Nations Charter.
The Russian leader stressed that the Charter is the foundation of modern international law. Putin recalled that the Soviet Union was one of the founding members of the United Nations and one of the architects of the international legal order and the modern system of international relations. According to Putin, the situation changed after the collapse of the USSR.
“The so-called winners of the Cold War—not only the United States, but the entire collective West—suddenly decided that something needed to be changed: why should Russia, no longer the Soviet Union but Russia, which had lost its well-known potential, continue to enjoy the same privileges as a victorious country from World War II?” he said, as reported by Klix.
Putin then said that Western countries immediately began putting their approach into practice, pointing to events in Yugoslavia.
“I will not pass judgment on it now—it is a complex process. But the division of the Serbian people into different national entities, and so on. Decisions were made that were completely contrary to the United Nations Charter. They simply let the genie out of the bottle,” the president added.
On Russian Navy Day, Putin spoke with Russian naval personnel in St. Petersburg. During the conversation, he recalled that the modern world order was established after World War II on the basis of the UN Charter, which was created by the victorious Allied powers.
